Domestic Court Caseworkers are Key

HomeFront's domestic court caseworkers form an integral part of the collaborative response to domestic violence. When charges are laid at a domestic incident, HomeFront's Court Caseworkers will be involved at both the docket and trial court level.

By sharing information with the Court Team (Legal Aid, Crown, Police and Probation) our caseworkers support victims and ensure each victim's interests are considered in the court's decision. They also provide safety planning, understanding of the court process, referrals to community and legal resources, counselling and treatment needs, advocacy and immigration status updates.

Victim's are contacted by the domestic court caseworkers, when possible, prior to the accused's first appearance or as soon after, in order to provide them with updates and information regarding the accused's case.  They also provide risk assessment information to the court, based on the complainant’s information and circumstances.

In 2009, our domestic court caseworkers made over 45,000 collateral contacts, resulting in more calls to the complainant, increased casework and an emphasis on including Child and Family Services' (child welfare) input on files.
