The Domestic Conflict Unit, Probation, and Legal Aid

The Calgary Police Services’ specialized Domestic Conflict Unit is the first group to receive a domestic violence call.  They complete thorough risk assessments, follow up with reported incidents that fit their mandate, interview the complainant and help them begin to navigate the legal system.  The information gathered through their assessment process then goes to those directly involved with the court process.

Specialized court probation officers bring information about each case to Team pre-court conference meetings.  Due to their specialized training, the majority of domestic violence case files are handled by these individuals.  The information provided is valuable to the Crown and defence representatives.

A full-time Legal Aid duty counsel sits at the docket court.  The Team seeks ways to fast-track cases and ensure the court process is efficient.  Time is often a crucial factor with domestic violence legal aid files, so the emphasis for Legal Aid is on fast-tracking applications and accessibility for clients.

"It was such an honour and a wonderful experience to have participated and to have been the recipient of the award. I will never feel I deserved it, but I will cherish the memories and the award for the rest of my career. The event was very "real" and the room was filled with lots of genuine emotion."
