Vision: A Society Free of Domestic Violence Where Everyone Has the Opportunity to Realize Their Full Potential

In 1990, representatives from a variety of community organizations within the domestic violence sector got together to form the Mayor’s Task Force on Community and Family Violence. Together, they identified domestic violence as being a serious issue facing many families in Calgary. Working together with the Calgary Domestic Violence Collective (CDVC), they began looking critically at the issue of domestic violence intervention and supports for victims.

The groundwork for HomeFront had been laid.

Nearly 10 years after the Mayor’s Task Force and the CDVC partnership began, the Calgary Justice Working Project was launched. This program brought together 60 community groups within the sector with the common goal of launching a specialized domestic violence court in Calgary. By 2000 – 18 months after initial conversations about the necessity of such a court began – Alberta’s first specialized domestic court was initiated.

The Calgary Justice Working Project had proven itself to be effective. Twenty years later, the program continues to provide a best-practice coordinated community response to family violence. Today the program is known as HomeFront.
